Uh oh. Hadn't heard about this.

"...But following a buyout of the family-owned business late last year, Paul Stuart's quaint image is set to get a makeover. Its new owner, Tokyo-based trading house Mitsui 8031.TO -0.75%& Co., intends to heighten the label's profile among well-heeled style setters in places like Miami and Taipei.

Plans call for expanding Paul Stuart's retail presence in Asia and North America and broadening its product lineup with more casual options. Currently known best for wool suits favored by Wall Street bankers, Paul Stuart is poised to go global with a subbrand it has introduced in Japan featuring golf attire called Paul Stuart Sport, Mitsui executives say."

    Uh oh.

    Quote:
"Mitsui will send only one executive to Paul Stuart's global headquarters on New York's Madison Avenue, but a shift toward Asia is already happening. Suits with half inner linings developed for Tokyo's brutally hot summers, have migrated to Paul Stuart racks in Chicago and New York. Another Japanese import: premium cotton dress socks."

Nervous about this. My favorite store given quality, classic style & huge selection. The last paragraph I quoted makes me especially nervous about deterioration. Is this referencing half-canvassing? Rick told me recently that all of their jackets are fully canvassed.

I think it is half lined, not half canvassed. Half inner linings struck me when I first read it, but with the reference to staying cool, I think they meant the interior bemburg lining, not canvassing.

I'm unconcerned about this. I think a little growth could help ensure Paul Stuart's longevity.

PS has had a loyal and important business in Japan for many decades. I'm not concerned about the new owners messing things up. At the same time, all retail must evolve and change. Many major brands have done quite well expanding into Japan and other Asian markets.

Yeah, but being licensed to use PS vs. taking control of PS are different. That said, I hope you are right.

On the linings, that's what I hope as well, but I also assume that full/half canvass discussion is beyond the expertise of the author and the target audience.

Can a half-lined jacket be fully canvassed? If half lined means what I think it does, then no, right?

Paul Stuart Japan is as good as its US counterpart. In the case of J.Press, its Japanese counterpart far exceeds what the U.S. company does, whatever that's worth.

Not sure why "Paul Stuart Sport" would frighten you anymore than the already existing Phineas Cole

Yes, it can. Nothing to worry about here.

It sounds like a dilution of the brand into something much cheaper. Anytime you add the word "sport" onto something it aint good.

The level of quality and dressy-ness of Phineas Cole stuff seems to meets or exceed that of most of the normal PS stuff. If anything it's more eccentric, and tighter fitting, but not more casual or lower quality. (I haven't found anything I've liked from PC though, I stick with PS)

The "sport" stuff sounds like it will be more casual.

In the U.S./European market I'll agree that the "sport" connotation isn't good. Maybe the more accurate thing to say is that prior to this acquisition by Mitsui, Paul Stuart as a brand has been grasping at new and contrived avenues for years already.
