Hi there,

I noticed that Paul Stuart's suits are often made by other companies (e.g. Gianluca by Isaia). They are usually priced between 1000-2000USD.

1. Can somebody please tell me if they are considered good suits?

2. What is the value for money?

3. What is the fit of their suits? Am I right that Gianluca suits are more slim like Corneliani and Hugo Boss?

The cheaper are made by Southwick.

The expensive (over $2,000) are made by Isaia.

Yes, both are good quality.

The one PS-isaia I have fits just like a mainline Isaia Napoli but usually has what I would refer to as weirder fabric patterns. The fit is unlike any other brand I have purchased except for Purple Label. Both Purple Label and Isaia seem to flatter my build without heavy or any alterations.

Thanks, that sounds good, if I may ask, what kind of build do you have? I guess it fits best if you're not too fat, am I right?

yes, it's a softer suit, less structure, less hiding of your own shape.

I was under the impression that Paul Stuart's lower line ($1000-$1500) was Made in Canada by Samuelsohn.

I think mainline PS switched from Southwick to Samuelsohn many years ago.

Samuelsohn, right. doh!

there are also some random full-canvas German-made Paul Stuart suits bouncing around (I own one) but I don't know who made them or when.

Paul Stuart carries two levels of Isaia. The Stuart's Choice suits are the hand tailored, fully canvassed Isaia Napoli suis that we all know and love and retail for just under $3k. The remainder are rebadged Gianluca by Isaia which has much less handwork and is only half canvassed. These retail in the $1250-$1500 range.

Andrew, that's interesting. Can you explain just how half-canvased works? Is some of the chest canvased and some fused, or just what?

Sure thing Roger. IIRc, it means there is a floating canvas chest piece and fused lapels.

Thanks, Andrew. Let me take this just one step further. Do you--or anyone for that matter--have any idea of how much of the top-line Isaia suits (like the Sirio A, for example) are done by hand. We're used to seeing figures like 95% for Kiton, Oxxford, and possibly Attolini, and 85-90% for Brioni. What would the figure be for Isaia?

These "figures" have only been thrown out by extreme brand paritsans who feel the need to carry the flag for Oxxford, Kiton etc. They seem to be willing to bend facts and make them up when they see fit. To the real question, I do not see much difference in the Isaia line and the ones that you mention above as far as fit. Some of the detailing is slightly more crude, but the overall shape is as nice as any of them. I think that in general, Isaia does a great job with the designs of their models. They might not be as light on the shoulders as Kiton, but that may just be the shape of my shoulders.
