How private is it? Do we have to have the postcard/code? Or does it apply to people who turn up at PS and know of the sale?

Here's the exact wording: "As a preferred customer, we would like to invite you to our private store wide sale on Wednesday, December 27th, before it is announced to the public."

Based on previous sales, I think stuff will be just be marked down, clearly separated from the full-price merchandise, and you don't have to actually present the card. Despite its pretensions to gentility and hushed decorum, Paul Stuart is always happy to sell you something.

Note also that if past sales are any indication, most of the sale items are from previous seasons and may not be the best examples of PS good taste. I've seen some pretty heinous pastel sweaters over the years. The good stuff often never goes on sale, so if you're in love with it you might as well just get it. Aside from MTM items, PS is currently the only store at which I'm willing to pay full retail.

BTW, the sale is already in motion. Staff has been putting out merchandise and it is ready for purchase. And the best part, no crowds! I spent about an hour there this morning and walked out emptied handed.............nothing spoke to me in my size. Early birds get the worm(s).

Apart from a nice black captoe ($380 from $625) shoe offerings are disappointing, in my view. Ties are 19.97, from 98.50, and some are nice (though most are deservedly reduced). Selected outerwear looked to be generally half off. Shirts are between $70 and $140. Socks are $19 (still a lot). Many suits reduced, but not significant markdowns. Lots of sweaters, sportswear on the sale tables, but I didn't really peruse.

Too bad about the shoes. What % was the discount on suits?

Looked to be around 30%--some sportcoats were closer to 50%. Since I think the suits are pretty fairly priced to start with, it's still a good value.

Yeah, while not a spectacular deal, that sounds like pretty good value.

Does anything on the PS website go on sale, and if so when?

Just stopped by the store.

Shirts range from $40 - $150.

Select models of Stuart's Choice shoes have been marked down from $625 to $389.

Various assortment of knits for around 50% off.

I picked up 2 pairs of gloves for about 40% off. There are some really nice sweaters for 40-50% off but was still too expensive for me to bite. The ties were cheap for <$20 but weren't particularly good designs. They had some silk scarfs like you can find from Drakes at $100+.

I stopped in at PS on Madison Avenue on the 26th and was happily surprised to find the sale already in progress. Wow, what a great store, and fantastic service too. I picked up a "Cooper-collared" shirt, two turtleneck shirts (in fantastically soft cotton, for $39 marked down from $78), and 5 or 6 pairs of socks (all at 1/2 off or better). I saw nothing to indicate that the sale items were "old stock" in any way. Fantastic stuff.
