i woke up to a $60 ticket on my car for facing the wrong way on my street (i live in one of those cul de sacs in the silver lake hills). but it occurred to me that since i don't have plates on my car yet, they might have no way of enforcing the ticket, right? i don't think the vin is anywhere on the exterior.

Don't they tow cars in LA for being on the street without plates? They sure as hell do where I live. VIN should be on the dash right below the windshield... in the little box illustrated below. Whether they ticket based on VIN I don't know.

oh right. duh. well regardless, i don't know if they ticket that way. it isn't mentioned on the ticket anywhere. and while technically they can tow for missing plates, if you keep the dealer plates on, they don't really bother you. besides, i can't imagine how a tow truck would even maneuver my car out when it's parked on my street. generally there is another car on each side of it.

I would go to the city's online parking ticket service/payment site. They have various ways you can search for your citation record -- by ticket number, by license number, and possibly by VIN. Give it a few days and then check -- I'd imagine you can figure out if they got the VIN number. If not, maybe you got lucky. However, I'd guess they did get the VIN -- hard to imagine they'd issue a ticket without some identifying information regarding the car. There's nothing on the face of the ticket itself?

there is a spot on the citation for a VIN number, but nothing listed there. i'll check the site in a few days and see what comes up.

Pay it. If you don't, you'll feel like an idiot when the fine doubles.

Pay it. A $56 ticket turned into $140 because I procrastinated
