I am looking at buying a pair of suit pants. I usually go with a 30 waist and then have the pants hemmed. However, the particular pants that I am looking at are a bit tight in the seat. Would you recommend going up a waist size, and then having the waist altered, or buying the 30's and having the seat let out? I have never altered the waist or seat of any pants that I've bought since I'm fairly new to wearing suits of any form.

if it's just a bit tight in the seat, take a look inside the smaller pants and see if there is enough material to let the seat out. The trousers should not be cotton, as you will see the old stitching holes if you let the seam out.

if you are concerned that there might not be enough material or if the trousers are cotton, go up a size and tailor the waist down. More than 2 inches is probably a bit too much (rear pockets might look funny) but less is usually okay.
