Pants alterations - how far can they be successfully taken in?

I know that without recutting the pants, about 2 inches is the general rule before it starts to mess up the pockets. I've been told that some tailors are skillful enough to recut the pants and reset the pockets, allowing for more to be taken in without too much distortion.

What's the most you've seen or heard pants being successfully recut by? Is 5 inches unheard of?

I've had a pair taken in 4". If you look real closely you can tell things are slightly misproportioned from the back, but if I'm wearing a jacket it covers the pocket openings and everything is fine.

Thank you for the replies.

You know, I am just considering the possibility only because I like the suit. I know it would be difficult even for a GREAT tailor however.

Thank you for the replies.

I've seen Carlos Coto at Summit Tailors recommended a few times on here and AAAC.

Euro Tailoring 1164 route 33 Hamilton SQ NJ 08690 Phone: 609-588-4004 She's really amazing, i've had her take the shoulders in on one of my Canali sportcoats, had her taper a leather jacket, she's tapered and or raised the sleeves on all of my shirts, which range from Ted Baker, Ralph Lauren Polo label to Ralph Lauren Purple label. And after the work is done, it doesn't appear to have been altered. Meaning, the seems look identical to the manufacturer. I believe she does all the work for the Ralph Lauren in Princeton NJ also.
