Alright I'll chime in with some observations/history. For a generation of French, country or third/second tier city men who are now reaching their 60s or older, the oxford was the default purchase in dark brown or black. I suspect because it was the simplest shoe available, the conservative choice. I know a ton who wore, for decades, these with cords or chinos (more rarely jeans, mostly cos these didn't/don't really wear jeans). This from Lyon brasseries to mountain farms surrounded with mud. Those oxfords, whilst well maintained and shined maybe not to a mirror but at least to a clean matt finish, certainly don't look like Simon's foot sculptures. That look feels very natural to me and if I were living in the cold parts of the world still, I would probably adopt it as well. Like our northern friend above, there's a certain stigma with trying too hard (which to some extent means trying at all).

But it is interesting to hear from different points of view, particularly opinionated yanks. I don't think Derek is wrong either. He's convinced me to watch out for that if going to the US (maybe after 2025 when they let us out of this place again without the 2 week jail stay on the way back).

Any 4 choice gradiant poll of this kind can be read very easily as, translated:
"Agree or Disagree: You can wear oxfords with chinos"
A) Strongly agree
B) Agree
C) Disagree
D) Strongly Disagree

@emptym clearly understands this as well...
Yes, the intent was sound but the execution poor (not a criticism of @emptym, BTW). If a poll response is subject to interpretation then it is not a well-worded response. And we DO know that some here interpreted it as mildly 'yes,' and others as mildly 'no.'

We'll just have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. Or at least I will.

We only know that some people who voted on the clearly yes camp claim to have interpreted it, self servingly, as a yes.

Yes this idea seem to be a mostly American thing. I think it is interesting how CM has evolved/changed in different parts of the world. Nothing wrong with that. Another thing I have noticed, on a tourist level, is; Italy mostly brown shoes. France mostly black shoes.

I've lived in Southeast Asia for a decade and I don't think it ever was fiction nor will it become so. @Riva could comment if he were still around. Well, punkkah wallahs are gone I guess. And the quarter million bayonets is now a quarter trillion US dollars...
I imagine the t-shirt was produced by Americans reacting only to the previous presidential administration and the term alternate truth.

I'm going to look in the Hardy Amies ABC of mens fashion to see what he thought about it!!!!

I'm guessing thats where a lot of these rules actually started out, a mischievous
Old man!!!

I know he was dead set against turn ups on trousers and Americans in Bowler hats for some reason 🤣🤣

I'm remembering when he predicted the sport coat would evolve to have a five button closure.

How about this look?

what do you guys think?

Even with the chunkiness of these oxfords, they still seem a bit too sleek relative to the rest of the outfit.

Although I will admit this combo is less offensive than any of the chino/oxford combos I've seen on this thread.

Definitely a SWD look rather than a CM look
