Do Oxxford suits and sport jackets run true to size in the shoulders? I ask because I've been looking at a number of items on Ebay and the shoulder measurements run the gamut. My off-the-rack suits are all 39R with shoulder measurements averaging approximately 19". Conversely, Ebay sellers - most of whom appear to be experienced in selling mens clothing - are listing shoulder measurements for 40R at, variously, 18", 18.5", 19" and 19.5". I've even seen items which are labeled 43R and 44R with 19.5" shoulder measurements. I know that alterations can affect this dimension, but I've looked at enough items that exhibit such great variations that I'm not sure that they're all been altered. Should I trust the shoulder measurements or just bid when the seller shows a 40R label?

Oxxford has a number of different models (gibbons, manhattan II, owentsia, etc.) I know my size in the gibbons and owentsia, so I just bid based on the model and tag size.

edit: of course, i'm bidding on nwt garments. used garments are going to be altered, so the size measurements can give you an indication of what alterations have been performed.

I believe the Owentsia. But a cautionary on buying used Oxxford. I am a 42R in an Oxxford Owentsia, but my tailor took in the right shoulder a tad and chest, back, sides considerably more. If the jacket were on e-bay post alteration, measurements would be quite different than if measured NWT.

Don't trust the measurement standard size and check specifics. My suggestion is to go into a retailer that carries Oxxford and try on different model's and sizes so you know what size you want.

For instance in Belvest, RLPL, Isaia , I am a perfect 46R. In Oxxford 46R Gibbon's 3Btn Dual vent I am swimming in the jacket. The shoulders and chest are all wrong and the 44R is perfect in everything but the waist. However, Oxxford Crest in a 46R is perfect fit for me as is the Manhattan II.

aren't belvest and isaia euro sized? you're not doing the drop ten thing to get the size, are you? a euro 56R is more like a us 44r.

i wear a 54L in belvest, and a 42L in the oxford gibbons cut. both fit very well.

Some Belvest, made for the US market, have US sizes inside.

I have a Belvest 44R that fits wonderfully. But I find that an Isaia 56 is gigantic on me. I guess I'm a 55 Isaia. But I'm holding onto an Isaia suit I picked up recently in a 54 that I fully intend to fit into soon.

I think it depends on which retailer the suit is intended for, because each shop can ask them to cut the suit a bit larger or smaller. I have seen Belvest with 4, 6, 8 , and 10 inch drops. Isaia 56R is my perfect size and comes out to be close to a RLPL 46R from St. Andrews. The Chester Barrie RLPL ones were looser but still perfect for the size.

Interesting. My sole belvest was intended for the US market (for Louis Boston), and I'm pretty sure it was tagged in european sizes.
