Need the forum's help.  I recently won an Oxxford sport coat on Ebay for $19.97.  Hooray for me.  I didn't realize that Oxxford puts the date of manufacture on the label--in the case of this jacket, late fall, 1984.  When I tried it on my wife commented that I resembled David Byrne in "Stop Making Sense"--boxy and big.

Are tailors capable of deemphasizing shoulder pads or otherwise changing the actual line of a suit?  The jacket's in fine shape, and I'd like to wear it other than Halloween.  Thanks in advance.

"This is not my beautiful coat."

I believe the shoulder is the second hardest thing to modify in a suit besides the chest. I think it can be done, but only by a very skilled tailor.

Unfortunately this thing happens quite a bit on eBay. People sell things as NWOT, giving the impression that it's only a year or two old, when it's really from the 80s or earlier. My advice is to be more anal about measurements on them. I bought a cheap Hugo Boss jacket off eBay for $15 or something, and I didn't pay attention to the fact that the shoulders were 19" (proper shoulders for me are 17" - 17.5").

Thanks for the advice--I was pretty cavalier regarding measurements on the coat, and I'll believe I'll file it under "lesson learned". My brother's slightly larger, so it might just fit him.

The lapel stitching is impressive, though.

Already is. The big shoulders thing and pseudo-feathered hair has been seen in more, ahem, progressive magazines as far back as last summer (along the the resurgence of the awful preppy look) so I'll bet that in two years or so, GQ will have editorials reading "Tired of the both the minimalism of the nineties and the constrictive, dandified look of the beginning of the millenium, men are now embracing the return of masculine dressing: Hugo Boss, Giorgio Armani, and even Hickey Freeman are drawing from the archives of an era that spawned American Gigolo and Wall Street. Greed is good, again." Geez, it's so predictable.
