So, I typically wear sports coats with dress shirts + slacks. Ive been considering getting derby shoes… but I already have cap toe oxfords.

Are the oxfords ok, or should I get the derby shoes? It may be worth noting that the Oxford shoes are brown museum calf and the derby will be plain brown

Oxfords look better with suits.

It has been firmly established that oxfords look good with formal odd jacket, trousers and tie. If you're going more informal than that, then maybe derbies are a better option.

It really doesn't matter these days. "Oxford vs. derby" rules are anachronisms. This is the same category of debate as "should men wear shorts?"

Black oxfords are the most formal and traditional with suits, however, black derbies can be appropriately worn with suits in the even the most conservative business environments these days.

While brown derbies are less formal and more traditionally appropriate with the outfit you mentioned, you can just as well opt for a brown oxford.

In short, wear whichever shoe you like most.

Derbies will likely look better; I would buy some for the outfits you describe.

The concensus established here after months of (sometimes heated) debate was to avoid wearing casual trousers with oxfords. Frightful.

To be honest I have mostly moved on to chukka boots for work but here is a fairly rare outing of some of my Cheaney oxfords paired today with brushed cotton chinos.
