I think elbow patches only work on more informal pieces: cord and tweed sport coats, sweaters, sport shirts. They would look out of place on an overcoat.

The look nice on blazers too....if done right (NO gold buttons with suede elbow patches please)! I am hesitant to use them on overcoats. I would do it if i had 2 very similar overcoats and wanted to give one a different flair...

Regards.

I never like elbow patches. They are meant to be added when elbows wear out, so I see no reason to use them on a perfectly good garment.

Do your overcoat elbows have holes in them? If you had a really great overcoat that just wore out, I would consider patching the elbow. If you were just thinking of buying a new overcoat that had patches as decorations, that's a different thing altogether. I have trouble imagining that in good taste.

My friend has a great overcoat with elbow patches made of slightly different wool with textured cord-like surface. It looks great, very classic coat but with a twist.
I say Yay!
