Overcoat or Topcoat with Shawl Lapels

These days, we see shawl lapels on all sorts of fashionable casual sport coats. Perhaps this is horrible and the violators should be exiled from the world of style. It is certainly more traditional to put them on waistcoats.

What about putting them on an overcoat or topcoat - either single or double-breasted? This must have crossed someone's mind.

It already crossed mine. I drew up a sketch and already put in the commission, getting it end of this month. The collar is a slight variation on the standard shawl. Should be interesting

O and probably the most interesting shawl collar I've seen this year is from a Gucci coat, velvet back, small shawl, double breasted. It's on their runway show.

This is traditional when a great coat takes fur lined lapels or on a top coat if it is for evening wear, in which case it is usually faced with silk.

YFYF: Are the sketches digital? Can you send them? A velvet facing is a great idea.

Otherwise, I understand now what Astrakhan collared coats look like underneath.

I've seen it in all-wool overcoats. Very '40's. I have a vintage pea-type coat that has a rather large one- nice, as when you flip it up it covers your ears.

I do have some kind of image in my mind, but it would be great to see pictures.

I think it might look too much like a robe. Would it be single or double breasted? Double might look more like a robe, but seems more natural for the shawl. I like the Despos coat, which is a little like a shawl, but still has a distinction between lapels and collar.

I found this one on the men's style site. Apparently it is inspired by blade-runner. It probably wouldn't quite qualify as an overcoat though.

I've done that wrap coat twice with a shawl. Both times in navy blue cashmere. One client was 6'4" and thin. The coat looked great. They were both made in the mid 90's, no pictures.
