Just wondering what everyone favors for a formal overcoat when wearing a tux?

Cashmere?

+1, although I do have a circa 1992 Ralph Lauren chesterfield coat as well.

A black wool herringbone Gentleman's top coat with peak grosgrain lapels. Bespoke (not for me) 1922. A once in a lifetime find on ebay. The lapels can be buttoned over the throat in chilly weather.

^I've a dark charcoal wool herringbone weave HSM overcoat, that I've pressed into service for such functions...not proper perhaps but, close enough to get me in, out of the cold and directly to the coatroom!

Adagio, that is an incredible coat; as great a step away from a Chesterfield as a tuxedo is from a lounge suit.

I have one that looks very similar to this one and in a similar color. Technically, it's probably a shade or two too light to be worn for evening wear, but I don't care. I like it. It's sort of an almost-Chesterfield, but with peak lapels on the SB and without the fly front. I had it made up in a wool/cashmere blend herringbone fabric.

Purists might object, but oh well.
