Outfit for a crossbreed between formal dinner and college party.

I'm going to a quite grand event this weekend. It is, though, mostly for college students (from all over the country). There will be about 1000 people attending, and even if it starts out as a dinner, it will end up in an all-night party. So with that in mind, would this outfit work, or am I breaking all kinds of rules by not being all black-and-white, and wearing brown shoes in the evening?

Also, how does the suit fit? And are there any suggestions for a pocket square? The one in the pictures is probably a bit matchy (yet not even succeeding in that, because of the sheen). I'm contemplating using a white pocket square instead.

I like the style, the grey vest is a nice offset to the suit and works nicely with teh tie. It might be a bit much for a ce\\ollege event but you can always lose the tie or something later onm if need be. The fit however is not so great. The suit is a little full in the midsection of both the coat and pant and the sleeves of the coat are too long, fix these things and you have a rockin outfit on your hands.

I might be riding on a different mood today cause like 99% of the time I'd choose brown shoes over black, but something about your brown shoes throws the whole ensemble off.... might be the vest, I can't really say... but I'd try on a black pair and see if it looks better.

The suit could use a bit of waist suppression, but otherwise looks fine. (No cuff showing, but I know my shirt sleeves are always looking for new ways to ride up on me.) Overall, I quite like it. The shoes are a bit lighter than I would go--those look more chili than brown. (But as Fred Astaire told Dick Cavett, brown is kosher after 6.) The pocket square looks all right as is, but white would be fine too.

As for the combo doing double-duty, it's always easier to dress an outfit down. The tie loosened, the collar undone, the jacket carefully draped over a chair and the sleeves rolled, and you're good to go. (I happen to know that the Electric Slide can be done comfortably in black tie.)

Thank's for the replies. I'm probably keeping the outfit as is. If I have time tomorrow, I'll see if I can find a better pocket square.

I agree to most points being made here. The suit does definitely need some tailoring, but there isn't time for that right now. I don't find it ill-fitting at least, more just in lack of definition. It looks sort of like a more traditional fit, which isn't too bad IMO. I don't think the sleeves are too long, more the shirt sleeves riding up. The vest is not being ditched, because that made me look awfully boring. I do to some extent agree that black shoes would be better, and I'll try and see. Only problem is that my pairs of black shoes don't really look to well, and are somewhat ruined. I'll look for some AE Park Avenues when I have the money for it - which definitely is not now.

Because of me being near bankrupt, I had to be really thrifty. I paid $25 for the shoes and $130 for the suit on eBay. The tie and vest are cheap and from H&M. Quite good value for the money paid, if you ask me.
