OTR NYC suit for a wedding...plus many questions :)

Hey all!

I am a complete newbie at suit shopping, but I gotta learn quick: I have the wedding of one of my closest friends coming up on Sat. the 12th. I'm not in the wedding party, just a guest. It's a daytime wedding in CT. I'm in New York City and I have a budget of $500, give or take.

I'm a tall (6'2") guy with pretty broad shoulders, but otherwise a slim build. I've got a fair complexion and light brown hair. I'd like the suit to be some variant of charcoal, lighter or darker I'm not sure yet. I'm a fan of a very slim, European cut.

Any thoughts on the J.Crew Ludlow suit? I tried it on at the Liquor Store downtown and thought that the lapels were a little skinny relative to the width of the shoulders. Also, the hem of the jacket felt a little long, dropping down below the bottom of the pant pockets. Is it OK to have the jacket shortened, in order to have a better proportion to the sleeves? I have extra long arms - any jacket/shirt that fits my arm length is usually way too big in the chest.

This is the suit I tried (they're holding it for me):

If J.Crew is frowned upon here, what are some other suiting options in the city? Also, can anyone recommend a good tailor here? Whatever I buy, I'm definitely going to have to taper the pant legs and take in the jacket at the sides; like I said, I love the slim, tailored look.

Thanks everyone!

Phil,

Welcome. The suit is ok, but you can do better for your $$. Try looking at some discount stores in the city (c21 really) or if you have a car, drive to an off 5th or NMLC. If you're in South Brooklyn, like me, you can hit the C21 in Bay Ridge. Ercoles is also nearby, and is my go to tailor.

Feel free to pm me with any specifics.
