Orphaned Jackets on Ebay

I'm always seeing orphaned jackets on Ebay for good deals. Is the rule that one should never buy an orphaned jacket to use as an odd jacket? Are there any exceptions to that? Most of what I see are pinstriped and I suspect that is a fashion "for shame".

All depends on the fabric (textured vs. smooth - though, smooth fabrics can work for say, a navy blazer), pattern (large vs. small - though, see above), detailing (flap pockets vs. besom pockets), and button style (contrasting buttons or metal buttons vs. buttons similar in color to the suiting material).

If you can buy an orphaned solid navy or gray suit jacket of high quality for a low price, do it, and have your tailor switch out the buttons for blazer-style buttons.
