As a relative n00b it's not really my place to start this but why not. Surely this is asked all the time!

Orphan, blazer and sport coat? If "acceptable orphan" is a thing for you - and I know it isn't for many - then that is a 4th category. I do own this one (and no pants) just not sure what to do with it.

Very hard to do get the color right in the pics, it is a pale light grey.

It's an orphan. Not acceptable for mix and match wear.
The material suggests a more formal suit (worsted wool)
The pockets are dressier (flap vs. patch or hacking)

Thank you. Honestly though this is a little fluid. How about this one?

Even if it’s not an orphaned jacket, you don’t want to buy a bump freezer. So NO

It's a $10 thrifted jacket that I don't care much about. Honestly the thing I'm most curious about is - is that a sports coat or not?

I'm finding the dividing line between orphan and sports coat hard to discern. Some are obvious, some are anything but. IMO this one straddles the line.

3 patch pockets, textured fabric, brown horn buttons make this a sport coat to me.

I think those are valid points, but for me the material (texture and pattern) trumps everything else...Sometimes you look at something and it just screams "suit jacket" especially from a distance..Not saying that's the case here as I think I would need to see it in person to get that gut feeling or not...

I think the other aspect is how easy it would be to pair it with some (none matching) trousers...I think some items that are sold as SC or blazers would actually be better as part of a suit as the material/pattern/texture is so difficult to pair up to none matching trousers...
