I picked up a pair of Allen Edmonds Manhattan Oxfords in cognac during the recent closeouts (for $175 shipped), and when I received them, the toe box was a little more squarish than I remembered when I last saw them in the store.

Because I anticipate that these shoes will last for many, many years, I would like opinions as to whether this style of shoe is more or less timeless, or whether the toe box shape on these is likely to look dated in a few years.

I generally like the shoes, but may return them if the consensus is that they may look dated in a few years. I am particularly sensitive to this as I recently dumped five pairs of serviceable square toed and spoon toed shoes at Goodwill because I felt they were hopelessly out of style (though I imagine that many posters here will tell me that such shoes were never stylish).

Some more views of the shoe here for reference:

Note that I tried to search the archives for opinions on this shoe, but was faced with so many posts as to where to buy Allen Edmonds in Manhattan, that I gave up sorting through them.

I would keep. While it is not a rounded toe, it is a very sedate square toe. Nice color, good shape, one of A&Es better designs IMHO.

I own this shoe in cognac and black. Paid what you paid for the new cognacs, the blacks I got for 18 smack-a-roos off eBay. A whole-cut is my favorite style of dress shoe and these Manhattan babies get high marks from me. And yeah, they'll be timeless.

They might be more square relative to your typical dress shoe, but they're not Kenneth Cole-ish square.

Keep.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the input and for assuaging my fears. I think I will keep.

I agree ebay can be great if you have a lot of time and patience. I am usually too short on both to do very well there. 18 bucks sounds to good to be true--most sellers ask $12 just for shipping.

No, not new, but in quite good shape.
(Pause while Heath searches his WON list on eBay to get you the link. No good, it's past 60 days. He goes to PayPal, hits Activity For The Past Year, finds it on December 8th.

Oops, they weren't Manhattans. They were another AE whole-cut in black, the Hastings. But look everybody: didn't pay $28...paid $6.49! Christ, I'm good with the bargains. The memory, not so much.
And to East Oakland, I actually do have a new pair of Manhattans in cognac for which I paid about what you did. And like 'em a lot. But have no idea where they are.
