Opinions on this pocket square/tie combo

Gentlemen,

I have a "festive attire" event (whatever that means) to go to on monday and I'm thinking of wearing a plain navy suit and a blue borrelli tie I just picked up at FB. I'm uncertain about the pocket square though. I haven't delved much into the "rules" of coordinating such items, other than that the square should "highlight," not directly match the tie. Here's the outfit with a light green polka dot square. What do you think? If this doesn't work, what's the general consensus on going with a totally different bold color, say a bright reddish-pink?

I would go with a darker color; about the shade of the dots on the tie. White linen would work as well.

I would also go darker, the colors now are too similar but still dont match. If you stay with light colors maybe do an orange, lavendar or pink pastel.

On a side note, I was wondering what kind of knot that is (it looks great)? Whenever I try getting a knot to be that big my tie always ends up much too short. Do you get longer ties?

Agreed, especially with polka dots on each. Might work if the square was solid. I agree with dp. The tie is great and definitely hits the "festive" note. Given common dress today, any pocket square can only enhance that effect, and I think a white linen with a multi-point fold would be a good choice.

Try not to use the same colors or same patterns when pairing the tie and square.

Since you are wearing a white shirt and a pastel type tie, I would just go with a white linen square in a TV fold (get one with colored edges to give the fold more interest). It will keep the focus towards the tie and polka dot pattern.

I think whether this works or not depends on your personality. If people generally perceive you as a care free happy go lucky kind of guy, this combo might be well received as having a touch of sprezzatura. If, on the other hand, you are perceived as someone who is fussy or conservative, this can just look like you were trying to match your tie and square but ended up mismatching them - and will therefore make you look silly.

The PS in the pic should not be worn. As somone else said, it looks like you were trying to match it ( which u wouldnt wanna do in the first place) but missed. I don't think it exudes a sprezzatura feel either, on the contrary it looks like you were trying real hard but it didnt work out.

I agree with the white pocket square. Maybe a boutonniere would add a nicer festive touch?
