Not really. I would just buy the correct size. The difficulty comes when you are in between sizes, which either requires alterations or bespoke/MTM services.

Even if your tailor does good work, its expensive to make a 44 into a 42. The problem isn't the chest. The problem is that the shoulders would need to be redone to fit properly.

Bottom line, make sure the shoulders fit. If the chest is too big, but the shoulders fit right, then it should be an easy fix for your tailor.

At the end of the day, it's not worth it. I mean, if you're a large 42 then a tailor can probably make a 44 work, but trying to tailor a jacket down two sizes is just an exercise in frustration (I was foolish enough to try this.)
