Opinions on these TOD’S boots

I have posted a link of the specific ones I want and really like, although having browsed these forums in the past I was always told to never pay full retail price for these kinds of shoes.
They are really expensive and to put it into context I’ve only ever spent around £100 on a pair of shoes/ boots before and not much more so these are definitely a considered purchase.
Would you say they were over priced for what they are or does the price tag justify the quality?
Ideally I want something that looks good both as a casual and smart just so I can mix it up.
If anyone knows of any alternatives to these that I may like I’d appreciate it also !

Let me start off as saying that I really like Tod’s and have a good number of them in my closet that I wear regularly.

1) contrary to the opinion of some, they are quite well made and durable. The driving loafers wear out and will become useless once the nubs are worn, but that because people are using a driving moc for street wear.

2) Tod’s makes a very comfortable show and as someone who is on his feet for the better part of his day, I appreciate that.

3) lastly, I have always bought them on sale. While I like Tod’s and appreciate the craftsmanship, at retail they are almost the same price as Crockett & Jones.

is it worth it? That’s up to the buyer. But if you can get them for a decent discount, I think you’ll be happy.

I've never bought any Tod's, but I can say that $425 for glued sole chukka boots is hard to justify. I would try looking into something like the loake 1880 kempton, which has an excellent write up and endorsement by putthison, or really any other goodyear welted suede chukka boot with a dainite sole.

Damn just checked out that 1880, love it ! A lot cheaper as well. Currently looking at Crockett and Jones Chukka boots too but can’t really pay that much, despite the quality

Again, contrary to popular opinion, not all Tod’s are glued on soles. Many, particularly those intended to be worn for walking, are Blake constructed.

Not saying they are a value proposition, but it’s also not fair to label them as disposable crap.

I always buy my Tods in the outlet store at the Premium Outlet in Livermoore, CA (Bay Area). I think I bought this exact model for like $100 there but just bought some other suede chelsea boots for like $250... I think at these prices they are great value and I also think the quality is good. If you rotate your shoes and wear them once or twice a week they last a long time. I think people get a bit carried away here with the GYW only and blake and glued comments. That all being said... would I pay retail for these probably not but I am the same guy that spends an insane amount of money on berluti bespoke - it's all relative.

What about Crockett and Jones as mentioned by Phileas Fogg !, I think I love those even more and only marginally more expensive yet I bet the quality is much superior!

Part of the appeal of Tods is the easy wearing, easy purchasing, and relatively fresh styling. I have a pair of driving mocassins and that are compliment magnets and that have held up strangely well. The shoes you posted are pretty classic too, and have a clean look to them. It reminds me of some of the discussions on the suiting threads, where you can find better quality for the price than some brands, but with the brand you're purchasing the idea (dream?), the cut, and the sentiment if that makes sense. So there's going to be at least a 20% premium.

I mean to be honest the brand itself isn’t an issue as long as I think they look good but more importantly make me feel good that’s the main point. So far I’ve had some great advice I just wouldn’t want to pay over the odds for them when they are cheaper or better made from other brands

I literally jost ordered a pair of the hand patinated driving moccasins from Tods off the Rake. The are very lovely shoes. I also have some Tods loafers which my wife got me years back.

Overall - if you like the styling on the Crocketts as much...buy the Crocketts. They are better made.

That's not a dig at Tods....I just bought $700 Tods....I like the brand.....but C+J is better.
