Opinions about tailoring a leather sports coat. Good or bad idea?

Hi Everyone,

I recently found an excellent leather jacket maker and in the process of getting a classic motorcycle jacket made for my wife.

I am thinking about getting a navy blue lambskin leather sports coat in an English style mostly copying my harris tweed sports coat and wanted some opinions if this was a good idea.

Thanks in advance!

Happy new year.

I think this is a bad idea.

Many years ago, I asked my tailor if he could make me a suede sport coat. The person he knew who could sew leather had passed away earlier that year, so I wasn't able to commission it. But I'm glad I didn't. In hindsight, it was a bad idea.

There's nothing really to it except that a leather sport coat will look sleazy and a suede one won't age very well. There are ways you can maybe make a leather sport coat work, but I think it would be more on the SWD side of the board. For lack of better phrasing, you'd have to look like a 1970s drugstore cowboy.

Aint nothing wrong with a 70's drugstore cowboy. I had a brown leather sport coat with western styling that I loved as a grad student, 15-20 yrs ago. I only wore it casually as outerwear with the collar up and a scarf. Here's a pic.

Not sure if it supports D's point or mine. :eh: But either way, I wouldn't get blue. Maybe if you were a rock star and it was washed and rumply.

I also had a tan suede trucker jacket as an undergrad. Weird to see that style in now. Both were thrifted and probably made in the 70s.

Definitely nothing wrong with drugstore cowboy. If you can pull it off, I'm envious.

I would just warn against it if you're thinking about wearing this with more classic tailored clothing.
