Opinion on Vtg. Burberry Trench

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a vintage Burberry Trench through Ebay, which I have been after for some time. The coat is double breasted and includes all the usual features (belted, epaulettes, etc..). The coat fits in a "traditional" way, but is by no means billowy.

Recently after having the girlfriends family over and wearing the coat I was subjected to mostly everyone bursting into laughter and calling me inspector gadget. I figured that this is something they are not used to since none of them ever wear dress clothing and certainly have no sense of what is appropriate as far as men's wear goes.

I am not insecure about this coat as I think its great, but at the same time I don't want to look like a cartoon character, your thoughts?

Go gadget go.

Its too big. Either sell and move on, have a tailor try and slim it down.

First off start somehow tieing the belt behind your back and not around the front it might help your look.

Edit: on re-evaluation, don't have a tailor slim it, its just simply too damn big for you

A quick etiquette point: men should NOT wear the belts on their trenchcoats tied in the front. That is effeminate, and makes the trench look like a dress. Instead, thread it in the back. Perhaps try the same shot with the belt in back and wearing a suit.

I had a beloved vintage Burberry trench that I finally retired last year in favor of the shorter, slimmer cuts that Burberry now offers. The older coats are certainly functional, but it might be a stretch to call them fashionable.

Looks enormous...time to move on. Others were right to ridicule you.

On further inspection, cioni2k might be right. I am afraid that it is too large. The cost to tailor it would be expensive, and you would be stuck with a coat that was far too long to be current. Further, Burberry will tell you to not have the jacket tailored, as it will affect its waterproofing.

I'm confused. How exactly am I supposed to tie the belt on my trench in the back?

Tied behind the back does not mean what you got there

Leave the belt as is, threaded from the back, but instead of tying the two loose ends in the front, fold back and tie in the back so it looks like a half-belt.

Am I making this clear?
