I just paid $189 for new shell cordovan Bancrofts from the Allen Edmonds store. It is my first AE, and while what I paid may be higher than average. I am very happy.

Are they obviously not shell, now that you have them in hand? As Grimslade alluded to earlier, the girl may have been wrong.

If they're new, and shell, you got a great deal. Hard to find shell on discount.

Bic, that's a fantastic deal on those. They would retail for $450 or so I'd say if you could readily access them (which you can't). I'm in love with the Bancrofts ever since z posted those pics of his. I think you got a screaming deal on a rare as hen's teeth shoe.

LexLoci, my MacNeils are not shell. The creasing has spider webbing like calf. The heels are also full rubber (AE shell has leather with rubber insert) and there's no shell cordovan designation on the sole.

Why would they discontinue such a style, or worse still, "it was not marketed for the US market" . . . I thought AE was an American company

Perhaps because they'd have to charge more than they feel they can get away with in the U.S. for them? I don't know why that would be so, but it happens all the time. And there's no question AEs cost more in Europe, say, than in the U.S.

The Japanese, to give a different example, have access to cell phones that would seem space-age in the U.S. Because the Japanese are more willing to pay for these gadgets than Americans, so it's possible to sell them at a price higher than the production costs.

Incidentally, I just BINed a pair of AE Cambridges in shell from the AE ebay store. All this cordovan talk put a bug in my head, I guess.

I just got the shoes and they look good. I wish they had been in Cordovan, but they weren't advertised that way and so I got what I bought...albeit at a high price. These are some heavy shoes! I will only wear these to court, so its not that big of a deal, but the thing I like most about them is that they are obviously not new, I could have bought a pair of new ones, but just like a new briefcase in court, it advertises "New" and I'd rather have a worn in look. Sometimes looking too sharp can be a detriment.
