Alan, to my eye, from the picture, those look to be shell.

In any case, the people at AE are very helpful if you give them a call.

Also, lex, don't feel too bad - AE Macneils are a helluva shoe and are still well worth it at $90. Perhaps not a bargain, but still a great deal IMO.

I emailed them last night. If I don't hear back I'll give them a call.

I called them this morning, and the 09157 number didn't mean anything to the girl I spoke with. She stated that the important number is beneath the shoe size, which I couldn't make out in the photos.

Just spoke with her again and the number 9147 is polished cobbler.

9107 is cordovan, so Alan's is either Cordovan or Cobbler depending on what that number is, looks like a 0 to me though.

May your eyes be better than mine and you be right, sir.

Did you tell her that the numbers on the AE web site are wrong in that case?

Well, Alan and I will get our shoes soon enough and we'll know then. The 09157 number that is seen in the photo is not the model number. I also couldn't make out the number beneath the size in the one photo that showed part of it, but it looked to be 147. But, I do agree with everyone that mine do not appear to be cordovan whereas Alan's pair does.

So what would be a reasonable bid on a pair of "as-new" MacNeils in genuine cordovan?

I sold mine on ebay in "as new" condition for about $100. The person who bought them seemed happy with them at that price. I originally bought them for about $55 on ebay; however, the person I bought them from did not know they were shell cordovan and did not so indicate on their auction.

I just received my Macneils, which are 9147s and thus polished cobbler, not shell as advertised in the auction. I have contacted the seller requesting a refund. I'd wear these shoes, but I wouldn't have paid what I paid for them.

Lame.

Are they the ones pictured in the auction?

I see this relatively frequently on ebay (that, and people listing "patton leather" instead of "patent leather") - people listing shoes as shell corodvan when they're not. I suppose the polished cobbler can sort of look like it to the uninitiated. If they're AEs and haven't been re-heeled it's usually advisable to ask for a picture of the heel to see if it's a combination leather/rubber heel.

I agree. However it was a newly listed BIN when I stumbled across it, and the pic did look like shell to me. Had they been shell it would have been an excellent buy. As it was, not so much. Ebay is somewhat about risks, which I know going in. I'll file a Paypal complaint on this, though, if he doesn't come across with the refund.
