Hello all,

I'm new to the forums and, in all honesty, new to "style". After reading a bunch of threads on this forum (including the thrift store find thread) I took a trip out to a few local thrift shops and at one came across a suit that caught my eye. The fabric colour and texture looked nice. I tried the jacket on and, as far as I could tell, it fit better than a number of other suits I've had over the years.

Here is the jacket, it is perhaps a hair too long as the bottom comes about .5 to .75" past my knuckles and the sleeves are about the same length too long. (oops, looks like I took the shot with both buttons done up!)

Here is the texture of the fabric:

These are the only tags on the whole suit, I don't think they indicate the brand of the suit at all except that it's made in Canada and probably Quebec since the french is first:

Anyways, the suit was $10 so I picked it up. Anyone have any ideas on the origin of the suit? Can you tell anything based on the style? The pants are a little long and wide in the leg, should I have the leg taken in a bit to make it a little more contemporary? Would you recommend a cuff on the pants?

Sorry for all the questions!

The lapels, low gorge and low button stance suggest the suit is probably from
the 1980's. It looks to be one or two sizes too big for you. No amount of
tailoring is going to make it look contemporary. Unless you are going
for vintage, I think you are out of luck.

Too big for you by a mile and the style is the worst of the 1980s so really does not cut much today. Suggest return it.

Thanks for your responses.

I was thinking that the gorge looked a bit off and probably more so since it's a 42 and I normally wear a 40, however I think the jacket looks much bigger in the photo due to the angle of the shot. Oh well, I'll keep it around for now in case "worst of the 1980s" style comes back around (you never know!).

Thanks again

The angle has nothing to do with it - it is plain too big - do not delude yourself.

Bizl,

Come back to the thrift thread. There are hundreds of $10 suits in the stores. You don't need to buy every one that you think fits.

There will be suggestions that you read the entire thread and that's not a bad idea but it's a bit daunting. Hang out and learn what to look for. You'll find it soon enough and you'll wish you had that first $10 back!

There's a learning curve but before you know it, you'll have piles of high end clothing that you won't have enough time to wear or have altered.

Chalk this one up to a learning experience and continue to accept the criticisms. There will be some that will be tough to swallow but take it constructively and you'll have the time of your life.

Best of luck.

Dig"s advice is so true.

All begining thrifters make these mistakes.

Some learn from their mistakes and eventually accumulate a great wardrobe of tastefull clothes that fit well. They look like they shop at only the finest retailers.

Some never learn from their mistakes and always look like their clothes are from a thrift shop.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
