"only 1 way" to wear a vest?

I understand/agree with the perception that a vest + shirt (w/o tie) = "douchey/pretentious at best" (but still can look 'good' if can 'get over' those connotations in my opinion)

however, I am seriously looking to incorporate this sort of outfit on a day to day basis.

The 'go to/style forum approved' way seems = Sport Coat/Jacket + Tie + Collar shirt + Vest + pants

I personally like the imaged outfit, how can i 'vary' to be fresh if want to dress like this day to day? (If YOU don't like outfit, tell me how you would modify to your liking).

As my skin color is 'brown', it seems grey is a conventional color that looks well on my body (bc I do physical training, the 'fit' of such an outfit is my one advantage i may have going for me).

I don't have a good answer to your question, but having the gap between the bottom of the vest and the top of the trousers showing (as in the picture) has always looked wrong and unfinished to me. I think three piece suits look better when the trousers are high waisted and the vest seamlessly joins the trousers. But I don't know if different "rules" could apply to odd vests.

This question comes up more frequently these days because of the popularity of the Thom Browne style suit with its shrunken look. You are correct that the vest should cover the waistband if the look is to be "classic." I don't think from that perspective that it matters whether the vest is odd or part of a three-piece suit.

To the OP: I'm pretty sure that if you browse the various "What are you wearing" threads you see some examples of the odd vest in action.

I will mention one principle which applies here and it's one that goes beyond the specifics of the vest: the vest should contrast with the jacket, just like the jacket should contrast with the trousers (e.g., you wouldn't wear a navy sport coat with navy trousers, as it would look like a failed suit, not a successful jacket/trouser combination).

In fact, assuming proper fit in all items, the problem of pairing a vest with a jacket isn't much different from the problem of pairing the odd jacket with trousers—the same principles apply.

Cheers,

Ac
