Hi so initially I was going to order from Indochina, but then found this site and started reading some reviews...

So, here's my dilemma...I have a wedding at the end of May and I need a new suit. I'd like to get a custom suit, but who would you recommend? My budget is $1-1500. I'd like to go with an online company ( i guess made to measure) based on where I live/convenience...thoughts?

Thank u in advance!

Your time frame is getting very tight for any kind of custom suit if you don’t already have a pattern that you know fits you. Even if the very first suit fits it will almost always need some kind of alteration. I strongly recommend you buy something off the rack. You will quickly know if it fits or not rather than waiting 6-8 weeks for custom to find out that it doesn’t fit at all.

Online MTM can be very risky the first time you use them. Turnaround time, measurements, and subsequent alterations can be unpredictable. If you only have 2 months there are great off the rack options. In your budget, I'd get a Benjamin Sartorial suit from eHaberdasher for under 600, spend about 150 on alterations, and still have enough left over to get a nice shirt, tie, and shoes.

Thank you all for your thoughts. If you don't mind. Two follow up questions:

1) I like the off the rack suggestion of a Benjamin Sartorial suit (they look nice!) and having a local tailor adjust it. Are there others you'd recommend at a $1000 budget or $1500? If it's helpful, on the spectrum of very conservative to very fashion forward i am generally on the more conservative side.

2) If i had more time. is there an online MTM you'd suggest?

Thanks in advance!

You should just try on a lot of stuff in person.

Your best bet on the MTM front is to be able to try on a garment and make adjustments from there - if the try on garment isn't close, no need to proceed further.

Basically, you want to figure out if you are really that hard to fit.

Suitsupply is a good entry-level option for suits. Their stuff is reasonably well-made, half-canvassed, and it's not hard to get a suit for $750 or so (iirc). With alterations, you should be well under $1,000.

Just ignore their product photos online. They're pretty awful, but don't let that deter you from ordering something and trying it out. Just get two sizes so you can see which fits you best.

Brooks Brothers is another solid option. There's a store now in almost every town and I think you should be able to get a suit for under $1,500.
