I recently picked up 3 belts in #8 shell by AE. Size, 32/80. They are made in Canada, and each made from ONE-PIECE shell.

I paid $90 for each. Isn't it a bargain???

There has been some discussion and debate about these AE one-piece shell cordovan belts.

As far as I know it was never resolved, some arguing that a shell is never that big and that the belts are made from some other part of the horse's hide. Some argue that AE is stretching the definition of 'shell cordovan' on this item.

I own one of these belts, have had it for years, and it has not worn or aged exactly like any of my shell shoes. So.... the jury is out.

Whats the difference b/t an AE belt and a Nordstroms belt or belt from Banana? Shoes I can understand the difference in crafting but its not like belts get stepped on...

I don't think that's possible. I also don't think this looks like it has the texture of shell. It looks more grainy. Shell doesn't have that look.

At one of the Chicago meets, The Pres. of Horween was there (also a member here). He bought several hides and explained the whole tanning process. Cordovan is big enough to make belts.

Off subject, but

The belt is grainy only right in the middle.
I was told the part was hitting the spine when the belt was still alive and walking.

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, this shell comes from the Japanese shell tannery. I have never seen a Horween that size but if someone else has, please correct me.
