For aesthetics, I love the Alden tassels as well as penny loafers. Unfortunately, with a wide forefoot, low feet and narrow heel, I've come to the realization that there isn't a loafer model on the market which would suit my feet even remotely. Hence, the best loafers for my feet would probably be not buying loafers at all :D

It you have only one pair, I think penny loafers might be more versatile than tassels. Now that’s me, and maybe it’s different in the USA.
Tassel loafers don’t receive much love where I live (I do like them and have several pairs though).

The day I return to daily suit-wearing I'll be getting a pair of JM Weston 180 in black grain.

I'm in a similar boat in terms of foot construction. I like loafers enough that I just make do with tongue pads.

I frequently wear them with a coat and odd trousers. For a suit I'd switch to a Derby or an Oxford ... but I'm speaking for myself.

What I have discovered is that fine loafers have one thing in common with Lays Potato Chips. Lays claims you can't eat just one. I say you can't live with just one pair of loafers ... or two or three or four for that matter.

If you were to only have one loafer in your collection, what would you chose?

I am currently looking to add to my loafer collection and, while perusing multiple different shoe brand threads on this site, I thought this would be a good thought experiment to see what people thought was the one loafer they would want to have in a collection.

Its a tight call, either a black calf penny loafer or a suede tassel loafer probably. If I (personally) had to pick between the two, I would probably keep the suede one.

I will say I now wish I hadn't started out my loafer journey with Ferragamo bit drivers, etc., and had instead spent those considerable sums on a variety of the loafers pictured in this thread (Alden LHS in shell and suede, some nice tassels, and a couple pairs of the Quoddy/Rancourt penny loafers I just recently acquired). The black grain and navy suede Ferragamo drivers I have now are of much more limited utility than I thought they'd be when I lusted for them years ago.
