I notice these people who have one iPod earphone in their ear, and the other dangles down.

I find this highly annoying for some reason; it appears entirely pointless and rude.

I think this applies to any type of earphone but I know what you mean. I was guilty of this when I was younger but not so much anymore.

It's like you're saying you want to listen to what the person says but not to the point where you stop listening to Tina Turner.

I'll do that only if I am listening to something and then have to have a momentary interruption in music-to-head transmission. Like if I am listening, go into a shop, pull out one, buy drink, reinsert. It keeps them in place (if I leave them in - even if i stop the music- I will be unconsciously talking too loud, and if unplug them both they fall down).

It could be worse. They could be wearing them in one ear with the plug not attached to anything.

The worse are people who wear those big cup-sized headphones, strapped to their ipods, AROUND THEIR NECKS like people might think they're some DJ or something.

I do it all the time. frequently I want to listen to music, but dont want to block out all sound while walking through town. I like to be able to hear in case a car is honking its horn as I cross the street, someone is yelling to warn me not to step into a manhole (no ghey), or a refridgerator or anvil is about to drop on my head. I wouldnt mind if there was a set of headhones which incorporated both stereo channels into one earbud so I didnt lose some sound and have the other one dangling

This is very odd to me.

I like to listen to music in an all-incorporating way--that is to say, I like it to be loud and enveloping.

I don't like vague murmurs of some song whilst some person talks to me.

I dont mean while having a conversation with someone. Dont know if you live in an urban environment, but while out and about there are many things to contend with and blocking out all other noise can actually be quite dangerous and inconsiderate.

I frequently see people nearly get run over by cars or busses because they step out in traffic while wearing headphones and cant hear horns honking. I also have no issue elbowing someone out of the way if I have asked them 2-3 times to move aside on the escalator and they cant hear me because they have headphones in.

I wear in-ear monitors (Westone UM-2) that suppress a great deal of ambient sound, so I typically wear them with one side in and one side out. This helps ensure I don't unintentionally ignore someone talking to me and don't get run over while walking.

I wear isolation earphones and I have to take one out if I want to hear anything. This is a problem becuase...? It's better than me going "WAIT HUH" to people trying to talk to me!
