What would explain the price difference apart from branding considerations?

I understand that Rolex uses in house movements whereas Omega use ETA; but then again, ETA and Omega are owned by the same company, right? What, if anything, makes Rolex better watches?

I'm also tempted by one of the IWC Mark something, but it seems to me that IWC screams middlebrow sophistication, whereas both Rolex and Omega (at least these models) are somehow more effortless, if you see what I mean.

By the way, I'm (still) looking for a simple all-purpose watch, with a $5000 budget or so. But I'm in no rush.

PS Sorry if I'm

quick answer: there is no right or wrong- get the one that appeals to you, even if its a (gasp!) rolex. imho, can't go wrong with a Seamaster, Explorer or an IWC pilot watch.

All of the aforementioned timepieces are awesome. I will, however, give the nod to the Aqua Terra line of Seamasters over all the other Omegas because they employ the new 8500 movement which is very technologically advanced and high quality. I have the Mark XVI and an Explorer II, and love both watches. I looked at the Omega, though chose the Rolex instead. I think your particular concern regarding the IWC is unfounded.

I highly recommend you try them all on your wrist before deciding. I have and the mid-size Railmaster gets my vote. It's a dress watch on a strap and a sports watch on a bracelet. Street price about $2k (on bracelet) can't be beat. Twotone
