I think anyone well dressed will get the "do you work here?" question more than once if you are in a shop, as most of the world dresses pretty casually.

My favorite is getting employee prices on coffee at the coffee kiosk at the Fashion Square Mall all the time in Scottsdale. They assume I must work for a men's store somewhere in the mall and automatically charge me less.

See there is some benefits for dressing well.

It never fails to shock me how much clothing and appearance influences people.

I have recently started reading Nudge - largely about behavioural economics and pyschology, and the winner of a presidential election can be predicted with around 2/3 accuracy, just by picking the most 'competent' looking candidate. Forget anything they say, their policies, anything. How do they look = if they will win.

When I'm suited and booted I don't get asked for tickets on a train, even in first class, people move out of my way in supermarkets (sometimes hilariously so as if I'm a higher being - I'm only wearing a suit!!!), I get the right of way on the pavement, girls stare etc etc.

Queue... me on the train... in jeans and trainers and a t shirt - ticket checking, people barging past me, girls not taking much notice etc etc.

My dad once had a colleague (hospital work) who was Puerto Rican, but very round-faced with a full beard. One time they were having lunch at an Indian place while still wearing lab coats, and some old ladies, clearly new to the curry experience, stopped the friend on the way back from the men's room to ask him about the menu. Luckily he had a good Indian accent and a real gift for BS.

Guess I better throw out those nailhead trousers...and I've got two pairs!

As to those who asked if I were packing, no I wasn't, but if I had been, I would have done it so well that nobody would ever notice.

Back when I worked at Petersen Publishing when it was on Sunset Boulevard, we would do a lot of photography behind the building. One time Dave Arnold and I were going to take some photos, and so I had tucked two or three full-sized 1911s under my jacket--"So cunningly concealed," I remarked to Dave, "that not even the most streetwise cop could discern them." I opened the door, and what should be standing there facing us but two uniformed police officers! I never learned what they were there for. The fact that I was a holding a big camera (my Mamiya RB-67) and Dave was wearing a security guard's uniform may have allayed any suspicions aroused by bulges under my jacket.

You wear a three piece bespoke suit to shop at Lands End, and you think she is nuts?

Some of us are still looking for the truth about the mysterious pair of AE. I still think a collection should be started for a digital camera that JLib could use to photo the shoes.

Looks like I'm only packing suits and traveling by train when I visit England.
