Seeing as how I mentioned him in the thread I just posted, what do we think of him 'round these parts (again, he's GQ's Style Guy)? Personally, I really like him - his bio is fascinating, his blog is a good read, and I think for the most part I share his fashion sensibility (though not, sadly, his fashion budget). He's sort of an aging, avant-garde punk rocker/one-time Warhol flunky who appreciates fine English tailoring and sticks up for pleated trousers; I would think he'd appeal both to the guys on this forum and the fine gentlemen on the main forum, and especially to those who are regulars on both. Or perhaps you loathe him, or are completely indifferent. Does he merit a thread?

I'm a fan. His writing always seems to have a healthy dose of humor and he doesn't take anything too seriously. ie. he's not afraid to sport the full-on golf look. Though I'm sure his closet is stuffed with its fair share of Charvet shirts and Hermes handkerchieves.

Count me in as a fan. I enjoy reading his bits as well, as Parker mentioned he has a good sense of humor and seems to know when to lay it on thick. All these "style gurus" from O'Brien to Flusser to Manton to anyone else who's written a column/book are all entertaining to read because I do enjoy what someone else has to say regarding dressing/style, even if I'm not at all influenced by it.

I don't get the push-button "HURRR!!!" emoticon; am I being mocked? We are not amused...

That last bit was a joke, of course, and should be imagined as being read in your best Queen Mum voice.

Edit - bit of a long-winded response. I'll just add that that old Kilborn segment was teh funny, as the blog nerds say.

One reason I like him is because he keeps it real. He's as likely to mention a second-hand couch as the piece of furniture he had custom made. He could take a $150 budget and make it work.

He's mentioned SF on his blog, so I guess he peeks in on us now and then. Maybe even posts. Who knows?

I enjoy his reading his stuff, he always seems to be the voice of sensibility. I may not agree with him on everything though but I can understand his position on most things.

For a long time, I really disliked Glenn O'Brien's column in GQ, although I read it all the time. I find myself warming up to him though. I frequently disagree with him, especially when he rails against "fashion" and whenever he endorses Prada Sport sneaker/shoes (c'mon now, make up your mind, sneakers or shoes). He does seem to be one of the less rigid and more adventurous of the style gurus around though, with tastes from Belgian Shoes to Supreme. But his being adventurous doesn't stop him from having a strong voice and clear opinion. This combination is pretty refreshing.

Having said that, I really like Scot Shuman's blog and his commentary better. Hopefully, the Sartorialist will be the next Styleguy. Maybe that's what he's slated to be.

His opinions are not only fun to read, but probably the only sensible one on GQ's roster of fair-weathered sycophants (Not that Mr O'Brien is one, of course)

Glenn O'Brien is much more understanding of that elusive style in that he doesn't have the rigidity of Flusser, et al.

Also, he considers Fred Hughes--Warhol's manager--to be one of the most stylish men, which I agree with.

I was thinking the same thing when he said he was joining GQ. I believe O'Brien is in his late 50's, correct?
