I recently acquired a black canape bark chestnut solid stick manufactured by Fox. It’s quite nice.

In order to prevent damage, Fox solid stick umbrellas come installed with rubber rings where the tips meet the shaft.

yes, a rubber ring. tbh, I was tempted to send Heurtault a picture of companies using rings on solid sticks, to protect from canopy metal tips. Suspect he knows about them, but doesn’t necessarily realise his customers might. Plan was to do a follow up after they received my damaged (and incorrect) order back, and to ask him if they’d reassessed it in person, changed their stance, but their attitude to the issue initially suggested something very belligerent about their approach.

I’m sorry your experience with Kichtag and Heurtault turned out so negatively. It must be very frustrating and disappointing to have such artisanal works of art arrive with flaws.

I as well figured I’d purchase a quality British umbrella before import duties become applicable due to Brexit.

But surely with all the money you spent on those foreign manufacturers you may as well purchase an umbrella from one of the premium British manufacturers?

There is only so much information a manufacturer is willing to divulge concerning their production processes and materials used. They can be considered trade secrets which allows them to stay ahead of the competition. Cost cutting isn’t necessarily their primary reason for their unwillingness to share information.

I hope you haven’t become disillusioned. Good luck on your quest to find that perfect umbrella.

if youre going to pay £400 and end up with a chinese umbrella, you may as well pay £4 and get one.

the most any maker is going to give away where their parts come from is the name of a country. the most i expect from a maker is to tell us this, to show why their price is where it is. any resistance to this, silence when asked about it, can’t be taken as more than sign it’s not necessarily going to be received positively.

some makers will tell you - kirchtag said their frame is italian, which i take to mean they’re quite low in numbers or maglia would be using something similar, and heurtault gladly said no chinese parts and that the frame for the model i chose was japanese.

UK makers used british steel until about twenty years ago. they’d proudly proclaim it, and they were not alone in doing so. fox did a frame called a paragon, and it was famous across the world i suspect. part of the lack of information that clarifies what’s being sold also relies upon poor website design, too.

a lot of what i can make out about good versus bad umbrella makers simply comes from reading articles and researching them. i can only tell so much, but i am having to compensate for bad design and explanation. it’s also possible for me to know that heurtault was questionable in their explanation of the limitations or possibilities of what i got versus what i could expect - i know what other makers do to prevent damage, and i know that they could have a site that allows me to set the spec rather than needing to write emails to do it.

i also know far more complicated things are handmade, which is something i’ve experience of as an excuse in the past; not good enough.

that’s off the top of my head.

the best looking leather handles that i’ve seen are on maglia francesco umbrellas. note that they use chinese produced frames, apparently. personally puts me off so i tend to try to find out where the hardware comes from before paying out high prices from umbrella specialists.

I recently received a beechwood stick umbrella and two telescoping umbrellas from James Ince. They're fantastic quality. I prefer the Ince stick to the Fox Umbrella that it replaced after I forgot it at a restaurant.

Lots of discussion upthread.

someone did buy one when on offer, seemed to be a slight second.

other than that, look nice but try to ask questions or find out about origin of the parts used to see if good vfm compared to cheap crap.

"Stormproof" golf umbrella destroyed in violent wind and torrential rain in Brighton on Monday evening....

The forecast was dreadful so I didn't take any of my expensive umbrellas (Brigg/Fox/Maglia/James Smith) when I was walking round to see a friend, but my 68 inch Gustbuster golf brolly was blown out a couple of times (despite the wind vents which couldn't cope with the conditions). Then, when we were hit by what felt like a squall line, the brolly was completely torn apart when the frame was just snapped by what must have been a 65-70mph gust. I know the Gustbuster was a huge brolly to be trying to control in such weather, but it will only cost about £50 to replace rather than have to repair - or buy a replacement for - one of my other brollies....

Current umbrellas bar one, another Fox with whangee handle and black canopy. Not stored here.

On the look out for a canopy in a medium green, possibly olive and something in orange. Possibly a Blackwatch tartan, also.
