I think I’m on episode five, and while not as good as the first season, it’s still pretty solid. One thing that did stand out is that in a lot of scenes, Krasinsky seems less believable as Jack Ryan than he did in the first season...though I can’t pinpoint why.

In what way? I mean, Jack Ryan isn't really supposed to be James Bond-esque super spy. He's supposed to be more... Indiana jones-y? (professor-but-still-active)

I couldn't make it through the first season of Jack Ryan, just didn't find it fun or engaging.

Finished it?

I did. I had very high expectations because I thought S1 was very entertaining. But in contrast,

I thought the writing / directing really sent Jack's character askew from both the source material, as well as the personality they had set him up with in S1. It didn't seem like Krasinski was playing the same character. He's petulant. He's nicknamed "bright boy" for a reason, and that didn't come through at all this time. His change in character made me wonder if he'd actually accept the crooked senator's offer in the last 5 minutes of Ep.8 because he'd thrown his whole morality out through the course of the entire season already. Maybe this "new Jack" could accept a bribe - which is a complete departure from my understanding of the character.

I realize the Senator is Ryan's dear friend, but the whole season becomes a revenge game with Jack doing extremely uncharacteristic things, disobeying orders (repeatedly, to absurdity), extremely rash, etc. They also utilize him as moreso of an action hero himself, as opposed to the "regular guy caught up in it" persona really captured by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Krasinski in S1. Jack's not special forces himself.

Jack's not one to cheat on Cathy, but he's apparently "single" from early on, gets in a quick 1-night stand with Harry, and is completely out of character morally. Plus no explanation is given for Cathy's complete absence from the season. I understand it's based overseas, but no mention? No casual call home? Really disjointed for me.

Also, killing off the "John Clark" character (Mathis? whatever his name was) was interesting... but what do you do with that?

Also, his pants are just too tight the whole time. For no reason.

Little things too, which I hesitate to comment on because it's become online troll feed; but Venezuela is its current economic shitshow because of socialist policies; the show makes the sitting president/dictator a right-winger with the up-and-coming candidate a leftist/populist savior figure. If you're going to go with the "ripped from the headlines" feel, little details like the political alignment of the villain is important.

Anyone watch 'His Dark Materials'? Premiered on HBO this week.

Really liked the books and was disappointed The Golden Compass movie flopped a few years back.

Didn't realize that it was out already. I just checked and found that the first 2 episodes are out in the wild. I never read the books but had high hopes for the Golden Compass. I'm glad that they are attempting a reboot.

Pleased to report that Disney+’s version of The Avengers still contains the triggering “quim” line by Loki.
