Oh my god that first illusion scene in the warehouse holy **** straight out of the comics! Bringing back JK Simmons as JJJ too?!? And then the Skrulls working for Fury reveal?!?! Peter designing his suit on the plane with Happy throwing on Led Zep as a callback to Tony and the acronym for E.D.I.T.H. :slayer:. The web swinging scenes in this one > all previous Spidey movies.

Which comics? (Haven’t seen it yet; haven’t read much of the Dan Slot run because I find him lacking...)

My bad I meant the cartoon/90s animated series:

Those illusions scenes were just

Inject them directly into my veins.

^That's the joke lol.

Remember Peter saying "I love Led Zeppelin!" after Happy put it on.

Also loved how they made this new version of JJJ more modern and sort of Alex Jones-esque.

Holy homophobia, Batman! So in preparation for the Amazon series, I am deep into Garth Ennis’s The Boys, and I must say: holy ****. Has anyone read it? Because it has to be the most tone deaf, homophobic comic ever written. I was shocked to find it written by someone in their 40s, in 2012, and not the product of some whiz kid trying to shock you in the early 90s.

I’m not even one to get my panties in a bunch over most comic-related things (<note the suspect phrase in this very sentence!), but man, are the attitudes here just deeply stupid. (Villains are unmasked as villains simply for...being gay; A gerbil literally crawls out of a slain villain’s ass; the protagonist often talks about how he’s literally scared of gay people). I’m just slightly amazed an editor wasn’t taken aback by any of this.

I remember putting aside Preacher in high school for being too juvenile, but this one...yikes. Someone explain.

Yikes. Sort of makes sense that you would think that when you were in high school and thinking you were sophisticated, but I would have imagined you had become more thoughtful by now.

I was relating my thoughts as a high schooler. I haven’t read Preacher since, but I wouldn’t equate excusing homophobia with being ‘thoughtful’.

I dunno. A quick googling shows that academics (thoughtful people!) found some troubling elements as well, though apparently not as much as some of his other work. Which is what I was saying. Reading Preacher, you might think, Well that’s a ****** take. Reading The Boys, I just felt embarrassed for the author; the whole thing is like a painful anachronism, though not in any intentional sort of way.

I was going to give Preacher another shot this year, as I know many enjoyed it.
