The Nevers premiered on HBO this week. Not only is it a Joss Whedon show, it’s also exec produced by Jane Espenson and Drew Godard, his cohort from Buffy.

I’m hoping they find that old magic.

Whedon is no longer connected to the show. He left a while back. I am sure the first season is heavily influenced by the work he did before he left, it's someone else's project now.

Oh, no. That’s terrible. Why?

Is it at least going to be an Espenson affair? Guess I’ll have to read up on it. :(

I don't think the full reason ever came out. Some are speculating it's related to the JLA drama and reports that he created a toxic work environment when he was working on the film.

For what it's worth everyone connected to The Nevers has said Whedon was professional with them and they didn't experience any issues.

Well, sidestepping his controversies and everything, that’s really a shame. HBO seemed like such a great opportunity for an amazing show. Nothing they’ve put out has ever really been bad.

I read his arc on Runaways not too long ago. It was really a testament to his talents. He was able to come into a long-failing project, and in five issues, completely turn things around, moving everything to a similar time period as The Nevers, and basically discovering the heart of each character while creating a fully fleshed-out word, complete with its own logic and enough conflicts to sustain a whole series.

Shame he didn’t get that chance here.

It's looking like HBO just may go all out as a GoT channel.

I'm a huge fan of Whedon's work over the years. Having said that, the reports that have recently come out on the days he was in charge of Buffy and JLA are not good. It really sounds like he was a complete asshole to many of the actors and actresses and fostered a toxic work environment. I suspect he's going to lay low for a while and won't be hired as a showrunner anytime soon.

I can't help but feel like it's gonna suck, too. Not that I'm concerned about Amazon's fiscal health in the slightest.

How does that compare to the costs of Game of Thrones? Seems to be the best comparison for a show like this.

At least they are not attempting to retell the same narrative as the films. Going prequel is probably the smartest play they had. Do any of Tolkien's books cover this timeframe?

The official description: The Lord of the Rings "brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

Good, because for the life of me I could not read the Silmarillion.

I actually enjoyed the Silmarillion when I read it a few years ago.
