I remember liking For Your Eyes Only as a kid as they dispensed with the special effects laden extravaganzas of the Soy Who Loved Me and Moonraker and toned it down a bit.

I think we suffer in the MCU Era of having to make every bad guy a threat to Humanity as We Know It instead of just like a regional warlord. It's that way with Mission Impossible and even the Fast and Furious movies now. It seems like they always have to escalate the stakes until they're pretty much ridiculous.
