It's more like "Why use bombs?" Sure, you could engineer a bomb that would work like that, but it doesn't make any sense to do it that way instead of using the torpedoes that the universe had already established.
And the downsides are pretty obvious from the whole "all the bombers died" bit.
That's fair, but it's not really the argument that's been made against the scene the vast majority of the time. Including in this thread. People almost always jump on the gravity thing when doing internet hit and runs on it.
I mean their original use could have been for land bomb runs. It's not unreasonable to assume that they would have been forced to repurpose the ships in desperation considering where they left off from the last film.
IDK. The scene was enjoyable and helped set the emotional tone for the film going forward and that's what really matters most here. Not how optimal the military equipment used was.
