So what's the protocol for revealing plot spoilers after a movie release so I know to avoid this thread until I see it?

I obviously haven't seen it yet, but there seem to be some strong parallels to the OT:

World-destroying super weapon being destroyed (Star Killer base - Death Star I)
Young hero reluctant to accept a talent for the Force (Rey/Finn? - Luke)
Masked villain with a tragic family background (Kylo Ren - Darth Vader)
"Secular" other villain, possibly higher ranking then the Force villain (General Hux - Tarkin)
Mysterious supreme leader villain (Snoke - the Emperor)

Some reviews already say it seems too close to the original movies. I will watch it and form my own opinion, though.

My opinion is spoiler tags should be used for a great deal of time after a film is released. How long? At the very minimum any major spoilers or plot points should be guarded till home video release. It really depends on how big of a spoiler we are talking here too. A "I am your father" moment would be huge, while the death of a minor side character may not be.

At the end of the day people should use their best judgement and not be dicks in regards to spoilers.

I think in a thread for obsessives, spoilers can be allowed much earlier than that. Nobody reading this thread is going to wait for home video if they care about spoilers.

But certainly outside of dedicated threads where movie details are being discussed...You can go ahead and talk about Dumbledore in a Harry Potter fan thread, but at least wait until the paperback is out before you start using it in general conversation.

But then there is a question about when do you draw the line...if you aren't waiting for video, how early do you spoil? I don't know. What I do know is that I won't be reading anything in this thread starting tomorrow night until I have seen the movie.

1: Nice try, but that design is obviously not from a Star Wars movie.

2: And while it looks like the lid fell off, I believe it's to be used with one of these:

That's the chute where the on-board toilets eject into space.

Not kidding at all. Use spoiler tags and your best judgement. I'm talking major stuff.

No one is saying don't talk spoilers. I just think the use of spoiler tags is warranted. I've brought up the point before that this isn't just some random film hitting the theater. It's Star Wars and if it ends up being good or not doesn't change the fact that's it's a very important film release for many.

Having said that I was thinking a compromise would be to indicate that there will spoilers in the thread title a week or two after the film's release. Then people could more freely discuss these things without the use of tags.

And just in case you don't believe that those holes that really look like gun ports are actually gun ports:

Unless you have a financial interest in the movie, there's probably something seriously wrong if this movie's release is "very important" to you.
