I like that the Jedis wore robes though, isn't Luke clothes there just looks way too similar to Hans, just different colors?

Futuristic space combat leotards make much more sense though.

I never really thought about it...thanks for the comic images.

I could see having some sort of ceremonial monk-ish robes, but it is true that it doesnt't make sense for obi-wan to be wearing anything resembling Jedi attire when he is hiding out in the desert.

Yes, why hide out in something that screams, "I'm a Jedi". Just come get me.

I like those comic images. Very interesting change in the mythos.

You have to admit it was pretty clever, hiding in the open like that--like not changing Luke's last name.

The space leotard would have had a much more pop sci-fi feel to it. Think Buck Rogers, etc. Luke always looked like a badass to me at the end of ROTJ so it would have been cool to see that carry over.

Still the robes have become iconic for the Jedi even if functionally they don't make as much sense. They really do look like space monks running around.

I'm pretty sure Lucas hadn't decided to have Vader turn out to be Luke's father at the time. That was a change that came while developing ESB, Lets face it for all the talk of having six films planned out from the start, Lucas likely thought he'd never get a chance to make another one.

Not sure if I mentioned this before or not, but I know another change that was made during filming was Obi-Wan being killed. Originally that was not part of the script, but Alec's wife thought that if Vader didn't actually kill any of the good guys during the movie it would make him come across almost cartoonish. Lucas agreed and the rest is history.

So you fall into the camp that considers it a coincidence that "Vader" is "father" in Dutch (and "Vater" in German). I realize it's not pronounced the same way, but that's still a heck of a coincidence.

Though googling it I find that George Lucas apparently went to school with a guy named Vader. That's hilarious.

So what is Lucas' actual original idea for the film?

He also originally wanted to call Yoda "Buffy"

There's the oft-touted bit about always envisioning a 9-part saga. Conversely, Lucas didn't let audiences onto this until after the commercial success of SW (ANH). My dad remembers seeing the opening scroll for ESB, reading "Episode V" and thinking he'd missed four movies in between.

It's easy to be grandiose as a billionaire, that he had a 9-part epic. As a struggling director with no real collateral to your name, I think he took the most entertaining part and bet everything on it. If successful, great. If not, it was just a story.

Yeah i've heard that it translates to that. Don't really have a answer and am open to being wrong on this one.

I know they originally tried to make Yoda work with a trained monkey wearing a costume. It apparently was a disaster. :D

Well it's certainly possible that Lucas used the name because he thought it sounded cool. Then after Star Wars made it big someone asked him, whose father is Vader supposed to be? And the little light bulb went on over his head...

But that still seems like too much of a coincidence.

Maybe the guy he went to school with named Vader used to bully him. Lol
