Most of the pre-Disney books/comics were garbage. Not all but a truck load of it. People complain about the modern stuff, which is fair, but it was like that way before the Mouse House got involved.

I remember reading that when it came out and then having to recalibrate my understanding of things when ESB came out. I think it was my first time dealing with trying to reconcile canon/non-canon in a storyline. I would have been nine or ten years old when I read it.

I read comics growing up so this stuff never bothered me. Canon is whatever is needed to tell the story. If it’s a good story it works.

It’s why I find a religious like devotion to lore annoying.

I was only a casual reader of comics, plus I was just a little kid, so it was weird to have to think to myself "oh yeah, I guess the part about Vader losing his arm and telling Leia he was in love with her and falling into a pit to his (probably not!) death doesn't seem to have happened in movieland."

Of course, as an elderly man now I like to think I have a much more sophisticated relationship with narrative.

You aren’t wrong.

All I’ll say is that it was well known at the time that the book wasn’t “canon” because Lucas hadn’t finished his movies.

It’s just a fun story that went nowhere.

I read all kinds of stuff that I certainly enjoyed from the late 90s book cycle.

Thrawn books, X-Wing, New Jedi Order, Young Jedi Knights....I just can't claim that any of those really hold up (especially the ones in there that were young-adult novels).

I also had stuff like the cool encyclopedias detailing all the different ships, weapons, etc. in the SW universe (which mostly drew their source material from the books)

They are also all non-cannon now, but they are the stories that live on in my mind.

This is frowned upon by real star wars fans.

Real fans hate the sequels/prequels and think everything after ESB is ****.

I’m only half a real fan because I enjoyed the sequels but despise the prequels.

I feel like someone from LucasFilm should have personally called nine-year-old me and told me at the time.

I was really disappointed that they didn't go with the Splinter storyline, not that I remember what it was. I must have read that book half a dozen times, along with a bunch of his "original" novels about Pip & Flinx.

His memoir "The Director Should Have Shot You" is on my TBR list.

I forget what the series was called but they did several “What If?” style Star Wars comics. In one of them Yoda destroyed the Death Star while he was on it to kill the Emperor. Fun stuff.
