Eh, I liked him. I appreciated his physicality. It was a refreshing change from the first three movies, where the lightsaber battles were tepid at best.

Darth Maul was the only good part of Episode 1, and I came to that realization at 12 years old.

Honestly though, that last duel reimagined lightsaber combat from the clunkyness of the OT.

I'd take the battles in ESB and the end of ROTJ over Episode 1's any day. Far more emotional and impactful. The problem with Maul (besides looking like an Ed Hardy design) was that he was barely in the movie and said hardly anything. Made it hard to care other then an appreciation of the choreography and freshness of the fight.

How anyone invested in the films can call Luke dueling vs Vader in front of the emperor in ROTJ tepid is beyond me.

true- the fight was best one of the new trilogy for sure, for me the best overall lightsaber fight is still Luke vs Vader in Episode V - not as good as Maul in terms of choreography but still good and great emotional scene, something new parts lacked

The only clunky light saber fight in the OT was in ANH. Obi-Wan fight Vader briefly towards the end wasn't the movie's best moment.

Also, while I honestly did enjoy the fight in Ep 1 it was the start of the ADD syndrome that infested the next two film's fights. They all started to get too showy. Pointless light saber spinning and movements that made little to no sense in the context of the fight. You could barely keep up with it all. Flash for its own sake.

My largest hope for the fights in the ST is a return to purpose. If someone swings a light saber I want it to make sense and feel important.

Oh, I agree that episode five and six are more emotional in their fights, and i appreciate them more. The Luke/Vader fight in 5 is the best by far

The problem with Star Wars (it seems to me) is that most of the ideas just don't stand up to a lot of scrutiny. But you can look past a lot of the ridiculous stuff when it's brief and well-executed. The idea of guys fighting with laser swords is absurd. But it worked for the most part in the original movies because nothing ever hinged on it. It even seemed to be acknowledged in the resolutions -- in Star Wars, Kenobi basically commits suicide by cop. Vader toys with Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, and in ROTJ the emperor gets bored with it and (I thought) showed decisively how pointless swordfighting really was.

But apparently people just want to see kung fu with laser swords, and they're going to get it. Thanks for that by the way...

ep.1 fights while showy they were both convincing to me
obi-wan vs anakin on the other hand... fronting each other and swinging at the air was really bad
i think equally bad was obi-wan vs grievous the retarded helicopter

people used to fight with swords even after ranged weapons were developed so it's not such far fetched concept you know

But they stopped when effective ranged weapons appeared. For good reason.

I agree that the fights in the OT are much more plot-driven. My personal favorite, like someone else mentioned, was in ESB, where it's pretty clear that Luke is totally outmatched (Vader doesn't even bother fighting with two hands for most of that duel). But the fights themselves don't seem all that menacing to me. One of the things I liked about Darth Maul was the sense that he was actually trying to kill someone every time he turned on his lightsaber. Perhaps that's just part of the plot, but most of the time I just felt like Vader and Luke were going through the motions.

I agree with this. The fights in Ep2 and Ep3 were sort of baroque in their pointless technicality. Plus they seemed to go on forever.

One of the things that seems promising to me about Ep7, based on the previews, is the sense that lightsabers look really dangerous. Kylo Ren's crackling red lightsaber looks really menacing in every shot I've seen.

yea, but within the movie logic it's acceptable since Jedi and Sith can deflect laser blasts and force lightning with the lightsaber which they can't stop otherwise(besides yoda),

Star Wars has always been an interesting hybrid of sci-fi and fantasy. In the context of a universe with the Force and Jedi Knights having a laser sword as a weapon feels right at home.

Fantasy only works if it's believable.
