I couldn’t decide if it looks more like Admirable Ackbar or the giant worm in the asteroid cave.

I'm partway through rewatching the final trilogy, and I'm aggravated all over again at the way the complete lack of development of the First Order and the Kylo Ren character. "Poof, 30 years have gone by, the Empire has a new name but even more resources than they had before (as evidenced by the scale of the Starkiller base), oh and for some reason Han & Leia's son worships his grandfather and got pulled over to the dark side".

Poe's clearly an idiot space jockey, but I suppose if you attribute his antics to "he's also an arrogant prick" they're at least semi-believable.

Star Wars has always had a queasy relationship with physics, but the space bombers were just plain ridiculous. "Bombs away" doesn't do squat when you're in low G.

Finally watching The Mandalorian during the near-lockdown we have here in Ontario. It's really good. I mean it's basically Lone Wolf and Cub in the Star Wars universe, but it works. Mandalorian culture makes a strong analogue for samurai values and the central character has good reason to keep moving on and not make deep personal connections. Some of the fan complaints about specific episodes I've read are, as usual, ridiculous, and show little understanding of the way that these kinds of 'wandering hero' stories work. You also get some interesting glimpses of ordinary life in the Star Wars universe, which I always like, and there's a few Easter eggs for the long-term fans (I enjoyed Mando sitting in the same booth as Han and Greedo in the Mos Eisley Cantina, for example).

Finished the series - that is probably the best thing that's been done with the Star Wars universe since Rogue One. They chose a story archetype that totally fits the TV series format so the episodic nature, full of diversions from the main plot, which is nonetheless never forgotten, the gradually raising of the stakes, the cliffhanger season ending, all made sense. And unlike classic American series (but more like British or Japanese ones) it didn't have to last for 20 or more episodes, allowing the writers (and production team) to concentrate on quality and getting things right not pushing out episode after episode to suit advertisers' schedules.

I think 10-13 episodes/season is really the sweet spot for most shows.

My son and I are going through all the Star Wars films in SWU order, starting with The Phantom Menace. OMG, this film is bad. Inexcusably bad. It really makes the arguments about the recent film seem a bit silly. I mean they don't make a lot of sense, but this film really tried hard to make sense, and it's just dreadful. The first thing that hits you is the racism. And it's everywhere. Every major 'alien' accent and character is a nasty stereotype, whether it's pathetic Asians, dumb Jim-Crow African-Americans / Jamaicans or avaricious slave-owning Jews. This isn't a matter of interpretation, it's so in your face that if you aren't seeing (or hearing) it, then you really have to ask some questions of yourself. Jar-Jar Binks... well, I'm pretty convinced that Lucas had intended for him to play a much bigger role in the next two films, maybe even a pivotal one, but he didn't anticipate the reaction to the character (which says a lot about Lucas's ability to understand other people). Anakin would be an engaging character if it wasn't for the icky relationship foreshadowing with a virtually adult woman. Then there's utter crappiness of the Jedi (why weren't they on Tatooine to free the slaves FFS?). Even the CGI, which Lucas spent so much time on, is sometimes dreadful (particularly on the grassy plains of Naboo, which look more like they forgot to fill in the greenscreen). Strangely the midichlorian thing doesn't really seem so out of place and doesn't play an enormous part, despite that being a big element of the criticism when it came out, but really, the only good thing about this film is Darth Maul. That really is it.

It is utter ****. And we have Attack of the Clones next... and from what I can remember, that one is worse. I can hardly imagine how.

Trevorrow's unused IX script boiled down and animated. Interesting take.

Sweet, another long video by a guy that barely speaks English.

The script and story look to be a hell of a lot better than what Abrams produced, and actually draw on what happened in the previous films in a way that makes sense, even if it's not what I would have done. The most interesting thing in that video is the concept art (6' onwards), which shows that Abrams did take some of this but just used it as random scenes (well, all of the final film is a collection of random scenes).
