If Yoda was the "strongest warrior in the galaxy" as shown in the prequels (or, at least, tied for the spot), it does invite the question of why he didn't come along and help Luke fight Vader, doesn't it?
Then again, he wasn't exactly a master strategist. "How about, instead of each of us going after one bad guy, we team up on them and take them one at a time?"
Also, was Leia really "leading a rebellion force" in Star Wars? She didn't seem to be in charge of anything until the second movie, and even then it wasn't really clear what her rank was.
When asked if that singular Jedi would be Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Johnson was quick to reference a line from The Last Jedi's predecessor as a sort of vague evidence. "I mean they say, in The Force Awakens, that he's going to find the last Jedi temple, and Luke is the last Jedi."
So the awful trailer for awful new movie came out, and I googled it. The news story I clicked on had noted some comments from the director:
Yeah, that's right -- he didn't watch the damn movie he's making the sequel to, where they said that Luke had gone off to the first Jedi temple.
