I hate him; I certainly don’t envy him. I think he’s naturally unstylish and awkward. There are literally thousands of menswear influencers on Instagram who dress better than he does. I’ve shown photos of him to a bunch of stylish women (my wife included) who think he looks terrible, most of the time. I do read his blog, but it’s generally in order to derive inspiration on what to avoid doing.

These aren't healthy emotions / feelings.

Detach yourself from Simon.

Perhaps start your own Blog, and definitely share it on Styleforum so we can benefit from your wisdom.

Ad hominum comments aside, where else on the web can one find consistent
information on leading (mostly) European bespoke tailors? If one is interested in
tailors who would conform to one's taste, but has limited knowledge or experience,
Simon is a useful resource. Besides, he seems to be having fun while earning a living
in a vocation that grew out of a hobby.

This discussion is necessarily ad hominem, as I’m claiming that Simon lacks the requisite style and therefore should not be positioning himself as an authority on the subject.

Here’s a list of 50 individuals who have more style in their left foot than Simon could attain in a dozen lifetimes:
  • Bruce Boyer
  • Alan Flusser
  • Luca Rubinacci
  • Mark Cho
  • Yasuto Kamoshita
  • Ethan Newton
  • Michael Hill
  • Alexander Kraft
  • Will Boehlke
  • Jeremy Hackett
  • Tony Sylvester
  • Dan Trepanier
  • Nick Wooster
  • David Coggins
  • Bernhard Roetzel
  • Fabio Attanasio
  • Michael Alden
  • Andreas Weinas
  • Matt Hranek
  • Jason Jules
  • Lino Ieluzzi
  • Brian Sacawa
  • Kenji Cheung
  • Patrick Grant
  • Angelo Flaccavento
  • Alexander Freeling
  • Robert Spangle
  • George Cortina
  • Greg Lellouche
  • Jeff Hilliard
  • David Evans
  • Eidos Napoli
  • Michael Anton
  • Andy Poupart
  • Aleks Cvetkovic
  • Gianluca Migliarotti
  • Paul Lux
  • Simone Righi
  • Wei Koh
  • Jason Yeats
  • Jake Grantham
  • Mats Klingberg
  • Thom Whiddett
  • Luke Sweeney
  • Sam Lambert
  • Andreas Larsson
  • Timo Huber
  • Kirby Allison
  • Danilo Carnivale
  • Hugo Jacomet
... and the list goes on and on and on.

Anyone who thinks this looks good needs his/her head read. He looks like a serial killer who dresses out of a charity bin

I totally agree on this. I always appreciate reading articles on Permanent Style about mens clothing, very informative.

Frankly, I don't understand why Simon Crompton is so hated: of course one may dislike his style, but has to aknowledge his passion and dedication.

There are reiterated rumors that he gets his stuff for free, thus he's biased in his judgments: I have no elements for confirming or negating it, but, honestly, this is not my impression.

Personally, I find Crompton's style a little boring and disapprove as he most of the time tries to casualize classic menswear, but it does not prevent me to enjoy interesting and knowledgeable contents and to take inspiration for my own style.

These are not rumors but outright confirmed by himself, albeit with some word choices seemingly meant to obscure that he is gifted commissions and products. He does not write about every product he gets offered/receives gratis, but there obviously is a selection bias at play.

One further element is that since he quit his previous day job and has become a blogger, influencer, and shop owner full time, his social circle seems to (naturally) tend more towards the set of people that similarly pose as menswear influencers and alike. The expectation that this has not infleunced his opinions and loyalties is, in my opinion, far fetched. These people also seem to make up a large junk of the list of people @02054218 considers above Simon in style, with which I take issue not only for the selection based on "stylishness" (some dubious choices imo), but also that this is a list of people inhabiting a microcosmos which I fundamentally despise and who I, hence, do not see as any more fit to serve the role Simon is undoubtedly inhibiting.

Interested to know which guest author you find most detestable and why?
Also wanted to respond here: I do not find any of them "detestable", I just find their writing style not very exciting nor interesting. Not the best starting point when writing in a way that claims such authority.
The one I referred to was Manish, who seems to be treated almost like a sidekick by Simon. I remember comments that referred the "lesser" topics like RTW tailoring and clothing history being sidelined to articles Manish could write, which did evoke some pity.

Also, if people here are interested, Simon has published his financial statement for FY23. Not much information to be gleaned from them though, due to *insert some expletive* UK law, we only get an abridged balance sheet

A self desribed funeral home director-style?

Mamma Mia!
Kirby looks so much better in his clothes than Simon. He's conservative, but he has taste.

Alexander Kraft is annoying and pretentious, but there's surely no disputing that he has beautiful clothing.

I'll concede that Dan Trepanier is more hit-and-miss.

As for Nick Wooster, he's a bit out there. But again, when he dresses in classic style, he puts Crompton to shame. He's just so much more stylish and fashionable.
