1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    Cheers,

Fok on behalf of the entire Styleforum team

Your best bet is to follow a bunch of stores that carry CPs and wait for the 20-30% code/sale.

I would recommend following UK/EU sites. The dollar is strong and if they remove VAT it's almost a guaranteed deal.

Some that come to mind: END, Kafka, Opumo (not sure they remove VAT), Ssense (Canada), Notre Shop (US), Totokaelo (US)

greenpoint represent. that place doesn't have the right foot traffic, i think it's going to fail unless they have a crazy e-com presence.

Anyone know how to change the # of posts per page? Is the daily subscriptions email gone from this new version of SF?

We can't do that yet. After all the images load, which should be done by this evening, there is a promising add on that we need to test before we can install it.

The reason that the add on is not trivial and requires a lot of testing is, well, look at the URL structure of your post: https://www.styleforum.net/threads/official-sales-alert-thread.38417/page-2589#post-8843803

Note that there is a oage number, and then a post. Some forum structures, like the Huddler platforum, are build with just the post number
    thread number - post number
    as opposed to
thread number - page number - post number.

The fact that Xenforo has the page number directly in the URL structure means that the structure is not as elastic, and we have to be very careful to not break the database tables. We'll check it out on a test bed, and see whether it's a feasible thing to do.

I used to read the forum 100 posts at a time, so I feel you.

Indeed, that's a bizarre/poor choice at the platform level since it mandates a standard page size for all adoptees. I highly suspect that's an ""out of the box" setup and not truly baked in (hence the plugin) here's hoping!

You can change the settings sitewide, but apparently, anything personalized might mess up the tables, and badly, as well as all our 301 redirects, which would, as you know, mess up everything. Xenforo is a marvel in that it shows how awesome, and also, incomprehensible, things can get, when you let developers, rather than "big picture guys" run the show.

Just as an example - the embedding of pictures, and attaching them, are seen as fundamentally different processes. This is only apparent when you are a developer. Most end users just want to put in an image. This was first brought up, that usability would suggest that both ought to be put in the same icon, at launch. The developers have soundly rejected this change ever since, though apparently, it would not be so hard to do, but would require that the core be changed (not just via add-on). On the flip side, the database is apparently incredibly well organized, and the php (front end) is apparently very efficient and logical, and there is a huge community of support developers for the platform, so customizability is much easier. Like I said, you win some...

What was the main reason for the change? Hope it's not backfiring

Another forum I'm a member of switched to Xenforo recently and it was met with a similar but slightly less negative response. I don't have hard numbers but I think it has hurt traffic. On a related note, it's a tech forum and it seems like they weren't able to get a posts-per-page add-on to work properly without breaking other aspects of the forum.

Well, first off, the Huddler platform is being sunsetted, so in a few months, it will simply cease to be.

Even previous to that, we were thinking of changing platforms, because support and development had gone from "good but flawed" when Huddler was its own company, to "minimal to none" after it was acquired by another company, Wikia. And the services that they offered decreased with time. This is a regrettable but quite common story in tech.

All platform changes are met with an initial drop in traffic. A few reasons, all obvious. One is that there will be some permanent attrition of regulars is unfortunate, but unavoidable. People naturally hate change. We try to do our best, but we cannot have feature or function parity, and this is not going to okay with some (usually not too many) people. Another is that if you have a week off the internet, people's behavior changes, and it's hard to change it back - this was a big factor in my decision to bring the forum live last week, come hell or high water. We are more experienced at things like social media and communications than we were 5 years ago, so that is helping to get people back, and some will wander back naturally.

I own part of another forum that also experienced an initial drop, but ultimately, the change increased the traffic and membership signup rate.

We seem to be lucky, with a relatively minor drop in traffic that seems to be recovering much more rapidly than when we switched TO Huddler. That took a few months to bring back up to speed, and after that, our traffic went up from there. I'm reasonably confident that we will see that, and then an increase in traffic, since, from the perspective of someone who has never used Styleforum, the new platform is more function and feature rich, and the navigation IS more intuitive, and as you may have seen now, the site look and feel is not as cluttered and the navigation is easier. My sincere hope is that most of the existing core community will continue to come, or come back, as well, since well, 15 years into this thing of ours, members feel a little bit like family.
