A day popularized in China for self pity and woe, buying oneself material goods in order to satiate the loneliness of being single. Think black Friday but with the power of Chinese consumers, Alibaba (China's Amazon) made $30 billion USD in a single day, a figure I still can't quite comprehend.

Some one here in China created it for joking (1 stands for bachelor, so 11.11 is called bachelors/光棍 day).

Alibaba/Tmall promoted it to an online shopping festival which likes black friday
