Checking out the latest trends on Reverb, guitar prices seem to be holding steady or even increasing. I assume it's due to people wanting something to do while staying at home. Or maybe spending money on instruments rather than vacations?

I have figured prices would drop as the market got flooded with folks needing the cash. My theory is the extra $600 a week in UI impacted the group of musicians likely to sell off and even allowed some to make purchases. If shut down happens again we might see a glut of used instruments.

i'd end up with a short-scale strat, volume only no tone, and the jaguar trem. on paper i really really like it.

i haven't been loving the hb for this git and the volume and tone difference is irritating when i'm dialing in.

I'm not a guitar player but for some reason I love hearing guitar geeks talk about them. Anyone else watch this shut-down video series Steve Earle did on his Gibson collection? He is surprisingly articulate

Although I have an acoustic and electrics, I enjoy talking and hearing about electrics the most. I'm currently mulling over another purchase but I only have access online and would prefer to buy in person. I want to feel and play the guitar before buying. Maybe I'll head to the Texas guitar show in Arlington this Fall. I haven't attended since the early 90's. I hear prices have gone up a few dollars since then.

interesting guitar.

the '4'-style mandolins are pretty important across Gibson's early lineup, they were pretty much the basis of the brand in the beginning, the type was Orville Gibson's great contribution to lutherie. before that mandos were typically the bowl back sort.

they'd have an oval sound hole and fretboard would stack in the same way. that architecture is the basis of the early arch top guitars and apparently crept into the flattop catalogs.

by the 20s Orville was out of the picture and mandolins had lost popularity, Gibson hired Lloyd Loar to revamp the mandolin. he came up with the '5" type which has f-holes instead of the central sound hole and allows the fretboard to truly 'float' unbound over the top.

point being Earle's guitar there has a '4' type float and is actually pretty glued down.

It's all mixed up in my head now, but Steve E. has a crazy collection of Martins in almost every size/style from various years that he goes through - the episodes started last summer & I knw he was still doing them after his son died - lots of good stories

i'd played a 'gruhn' design Hohner for about 15 years, and then spent a few years shopping around for a replacement. I ended up finding a D-18.

That dreadnought had evolved some important aspects after WWII. most meaningfully (imho) they shifted the bracing to better support the top and switched from adirondack to sitka spruce for the soundboard. sometime around 2012 they went back to the open bracing and adirondack (stock of adi was depleted by the 50s but the supply is back).

the *new* version of the D-18 is fantastic, more 'open' and warmer than the previous version and louder.

but. the version from the 50s to the 2011 is two guitars in one. the sitka can seem somewhat anemic, until you dig in. I was able to find a NOS after the switch and it was muffled from non-play. I played it in a bit and felt I could hear the potential.

I had the setup done at a very well-regarded shop and they blew it on the first try. after a re-negotiation the stock bridge was replaced with an uncompensated and the action was basically a bluegrass setup. The new ones cannot do what this one could, super special.

what. a. guitar. i really do wish i still had it.

Although not really... I've paid more than that in strings alone over the years...and the nice gig bag I sold it with probably had an MSRP as high as the guitar itself ($69.99)

It was always a perfectly fine instrument though. Couldn't really play my electric in the dorms/student apartments and with decent strings on it, it always played pretty well. I must have lucked out on a good copy as I imagine the QC is pretty bad.

Now I'm back down to just the strat and the breedlove acoustic.

Well, I’m pretty sure both have the ABR-1 bridge. I do like the 335’s stop bar tailpiece instead the Casino’s trapeze. But at the end of the day, they play a lot more differently than I would have thought. Not one better than the other but definitely different.
